I recently put in a new shower valve and now have a peculiar problem. When I turn on the hot water I get just a few seconds of lightly rusty water. Only the hot thought. The copper comes through the slab and an iron pipe. I suppose the iron pipe just protects the copper where is penetrates the slab. I fear that during installation I might have stressed the copper and now there is a breach between the two, allowing that bit of rust to come through. Thoughts.

I had a new gas unit put in about a month before, no rust. It's only at the shower that I see rust at. That started happening soon after I replaced the shower valve.

Can you explain more on " The copper comes through the slab and an iron pipe " Is the copper connected to the iron pipe and water passes through the iron pipe. that will give you rust in the water. OR does the copper some how run through a section of iron pipe like a sleeve?

is all the piping to valve copper and is it soldered into valve or was there any threaded nipples/fittings involved?

It seems to pass through like a sleeve. It's a bit corroded where the copper exits the iron and I wanted to be gentle. I'll take another look through to be absolutely sure.

The water heater I know has copper through the slab. The sink in that bathroom has iron nipples through the wall, I cant see the pipe below it. If it was at the sink I would think it would come out there instead. I'll get some pics.

Sorry for the delay. The copper does pass through an iron pipe as it exits the slab, I checked it with a magnet. There is no threaded connection though.
