Hello folks,

Some people are mechanically inclined. I am mechanically uninclined. I'm working on fixing my hot water sink faucet, a 1925 Chicago Standard.

It was leaking and I removed the cartridge, replaced it, and then when the shutoff valve is on the water comes out full blast.

Here is the cartridge:

Here is the...part that the cartridge was screwed into:

I can look in and see a gasket, and I'm sure the rest of the hardware is in there also. I can grab the gasket with a bent paper clip but it is bigger than the hole that I'm trying to fish it out of. (Ok, so I probably pulled too hard on the cartridge and yanked the gasket and the rest of the hardware off...not the first time I've made something worse.)

I figure that I need to unscrew something to get those parts out. Here is the question. Should I gently unscrew the part that is on top of the sink?

Or, should I go underneath the sink and unscrew what I find there:

I know I had this cartridge out correctly about 30 years ago but I don't remember how I did it.

Thank you.

Not knowing this unit, but, based on vast experience, you would be best off doing this work on a bench.
There is probably a washer and screw stuck inside the valve body.
Those parts need to come out.
I am an old grouch and would absolutely consider replacing altogether.

Screw the stem back in but not the bonnet. Then yank straight up.

The rest of *most of the parts that Breplumb talked about will probably/hopefully come out.

Thanks guys. I screwed the stem back in and rocked/tapped it gently from side to side, and got the bonnet/barrel out. Also got the washer and gasket out. The threads on the stem are stripped. I took it to a place on Cleveland's west side, Menyhart Plumbing and Supply. They carry old stuff like this. They're out of stock on this but they ordered a new stem which should be here Friday or Sat. About $30. Sounds good to me. Thanks again.
