I have a faulty shower diverter. I can't extract the cartridge and don't want to force anything if there is a brand-specific method to the extraction. Also will be helpful to find a replacement cartridge if I have the brand. Does anyone recognize this hardware? It was installed between 1978 and 1981. Thank you!

The stem should unscrew counterclockwise, they basically all do. Get a better picture with a flash so I can see around the stem into the wall.

Once the stem is out we can take measurements to identify it.

Where are you located ?

Thanks! Can't look into the wall it's all foamed up. It's a16 ridges on the stem in case that helps identifying.

Wrench it off counterclockwise and post a picture of the stem. Spline size or tooth count is of no help, unfortunately.

My WAG is American Standard. Definitely need to turn water off and remove the cartridge for a better look.
