I plan on removing some old cast iron pipes, but have no clue what the can that is pictured is for. Can someone tel me what it is and do I need it. I have a bath tub that drains into it. Any help would be appreciated.

Dont know why the pictures are sideways.

Old drum trap. You can remove and replace with modern ABS or PVC p-trap and drainage. You will also need to connect a vent

Fancy that, didnt notice the ptrap on my phone.

Im currently awaiting a customers arrival home so i can make a quick repair, and go home myself. Brain is mushy today

Used to hold the pipe. I want to remove all the cast iron.

This could be a vent going back up into wall.

That looks like lead pipe. Don't see much of that here in SoCal.
