Hi

I've recently moved into a new house and we have a well.

The water smells quite bad and we suspect we may need to shock the well with bleach but it's also quite yellow and murky. If the bath is full, you can't see the bottom.

I don't know much about wells at all but we have found that our filter, which we inherited, looks in dire need of replacing. Thing is, I have no idea what kind of filter it is. Home depot couldn't help.

I have attached pictures and I wonder if anyone would be familiar with such a filter and could advise me where to find one. Also, is this likely the cause of our murky water and/or smell? Maybe finding a new filter will fix the problem and we won't need to shock the well.

FYI, we aren't drinking the well water.

That appears to be a sediment/sand separator and is not a proper filter(s). It's purpose is to remove large particulates before the water enters filtration. The smell is from hydrogen gas and is usually treated by peroxide or chlorine injection.

Shocking the well is not going to solve anything until you have the water properly analyzed and a treatment plan is designed.

Chlorine (house hold bleach) is not good for you.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ADDENDUM (Fr.) !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And, the separator should have a wire mesh screen in it which I don't see. It is useless without the screen.

Like Kultulz says, there is no screen in that filter. They probably took it out because it was clogging often. From the look and smell I think it is iron bacteria and maybe even some sulfur. A water test will tell you what it is so you can figure out how to deal with it.

Even though those things are called whole house filters, don't believe it. The iron you have will go right through that thing even with the filter element in it.
Have your water tested for iron, hardness, sulfur and check the PH. You may also want to check for manganese.
