Hi all,

I just recently became a homeowner, and I need your help with a plumbing issue.

I recently noticed some water stain on the 2nd floor ceiling in our 3-story townhome. It turned out that the shower drain in the 3rd floor master bedroom is leaking. I had a plumber come and check on the problem. He opened the shower drain strainer and told me that the builder did a lousy job there. The builder didn't align the drain and the pipe underneath (offset by around 1/2 inch or so). Therefore the drain and the pipe are NOT connected at all! Therefore water has been slowly seeping through the gap and into the concrete below the shower. I attached a picture. You can kinda see the concrete around the drain is all wet.

The guy told me that the repair would require opening up the 2nd floor ceiling and the concrete below the shower and re-piping to align the drain with the pipe. It doesn't sound like a simple job.

I want to get a second opinion from this forum. I am also thinking if it is possible to apply a relatively easy fix by adding a funnel (or something else) to guide the water into the pipe and sealing the funnel really well? This way, I can completely avoid opening the ceiling and etc (my wife doesn't want to open the ceiling as it will cause a big mess in the 2nd floor living room).

Since I am a new homeowner, I am not sure what solution is feasible and what is not. I like my "funneling" idea, but don't know how to execute it. Please help me. I would be especially thankful if you think my "funneling" idea is feasible and can give guidance on how to DIY it (parts, instructions, etc).

Thank you so much and happy holidays.

Awful job.

Open the ceiling below the shower. It's no big deal. I don't understand why people are so against cutting drywall, it can be patched/painted in a few days. Have a proper 2 piece shower drain assembly installed. Repair the drywall and be worry free. Anything else is just a band aid

Hi Matt30,

Thanks for the reply. I understand the only permanent fix is to do what you said.

But I won't be able to hire someone to do this job until probably early February (my own time constraints and contractors are in high demand after hurricane Harvey in Houston).

If I want to apply a temporary band-aid fix for the time being, can you please advise how I should do it?

Thank you and merry Christmas!
