Water dripping from tub faucet

It was leaking from the hot water, but I swapped it over to the cold. The leak followed the stem.

I tried to repack with graphite packing material to no avail, although it did improve the situation. It looked like that was what was originally in there. I don't have a ton of confidence in my packing technique. Should I try a different packing product, or do you think I need a new stem?

If I need a new stem, any idea what brand this is? They are 16 spline and about 4 5/16".

I do have to giggle a bit on that. Did you really think the leak would stay on the hot side if you swapped it to the cold side?

I looked through one of my stem books and did not see a match.

I thought maybe the seat or valve body could be bad. Also preferred to have the leak on the cold side so I don't burn my hand operating the handle, and I use more hot water than cold.

Maybe I can Help. Try using a couple more wraps of packing string.
That packing nut looks like it bottomed out.
The nut is supposed to compress the string around the stem.

when snugged down it should look like the one on the second photo.

Try the graphite string instead of the teflon

You're right. I was over-torquing the packing nut. It is now leak free.
