Good question Liquid. If there is such a thing as a un-vented system I sure have wasted a lot of pipe over the years.

John

yes. Know anybody that wants to buy a plunger?? they must also be of religious faith because they will need divine intervention to only need said plunger a few times a day. :)

"Hello Matt24",

Please Explain about the Unvented System Y Plan for the benefit of the Senior Members.

They will no doubt know of it by a different Name and will then be able to Advise You in detail.

CHRISM

Ahhh Indirect system, Gotcha....

so, what is the Question then ?

CHRISM, from what I have been able to find out about the system it is smiler to what we call a indirect water heater.

"Hello John",

I know about `Unvented Hot Water Heaters / Cylinders` - but I don`t know if this is what was asked about - ?

The `Y` COULD refer to a particular Pipework and Motorised Zone Valve configuration on a Heating System / Connection to an Unvented Hot Water Cylinder IF the Original Poster - `Matt24` was asking this Question in the U.K. - But as He is NOT - I don`t know what that refers to ?

Here in the U.K. [and in Europe] there are `Pressurised` / Mains Water Fed Water Heaters which are Identified as `Unvented Hot Water Cylinders`[Tanks] - We have been Installing these for about 20 Years - Although One has to have actually Passed an Exam / Assessment to Legally Install / Maintain / Work On this type of Hot Water Heater - as Incorrectly Installed without the Safety Controls they have the capability to become a Hot Water / Steam BOMB !

HERE in the U.K. [and Europe] these Mains Water Fed / Pressurised Hot Water Heaters have a Thermal Expansion Vessel - although when I wrote about this previously on this Forum I was informed that this is NOT `Usual` in the U.S. for a Mains Water Fed Hot Water Heater.

I think that I remember this was when I was New to the Forum and I was VERY Surprised to be informed that in the U.S. the Thermal Expansion was either `Taken Up within the Supply Pipework`/ The Hot Water Heater - OR was Allowed to Discharge via the Pressure Relief Valve - thus Relieving the Thermal Expansion !

I do know that Plumbers in the U.S. DO Install Thermal Expansion Vessels / Tanks - But from what I was told these are Retrofitted - usually to resolve a Problem with Thermal Expansion on a `Standard` Hot Water Heater / System.

What I was describing at the time - a Mains Water Fed Hot Water Cylinder / Tank that has a Thermal Expansion Vessel / Tank actually Fitted to it was `Unheard Of` - in the experience of those Plumbers who replied to My Posts.

This is from Memory - So Please allow for `Words to that Effect` If anyone bothers to go back and actually `Find` those Posts.

I asked Matt24 to Post some more Details about this as I was interested in exactly what He meant - I doubt whether He does mean these `Unvented Hot Water Cylinders / Tanks` - ?

I hope that He will respond to My request.

Regards,

Chris

I googled the images for "y plan heating system" and "s plan heating system". I don't install these systems, but the images make it pretty clear as to the differences and the general design of both.

"Hello Caduceus",

I commented that I know about `Unvented Hot Water Cylinders / Tanks` because We have been Installing them for 20 Years - and that here in the U.K. there is a Heating System Design called the `Y Plan` - BUT as Matt24 is in the U.S. - I doubted that this is what He means.

No-one on here has been commenting or asking about the differences between the Honeywell `Y Plan` and `S Plan` etc. - Although I do expect that Heating Systems may be configured using Honeywell Zone Valves in the U.S. - Is the Honeywell terminology used to Identify the type of System - I.E. `Y Plan` and `S Plan` - ?

I am GUESSING perhaps NOT - As You stated that You Googled `Y Plan` and `S Plan` - ?

Even though You stated that you don`t Install these Systems I am sure that You would have heard of the terms `Y Plan` and `S Plan` from other Tradesmen - ?

I wonder why Matt24 has Not responded to clarify what He means - ?

Regards,

Chris
