tub sprout leak with Symmons trim🛁

i got a minor leak with new model trim and wonder if it was cuz incompatiblity ... i was able to minimize by swing slight handle lever left toward tub spout function.... in a jam , i got the new model (Symmons S9600TSPTRMRP ) , nobody within driving distance had old model , also was on walmart/ amazon but unavailable .... or was leak due to faulty old diverter???

That symmons valve is designed to drop a little water from the spout when using the shower head, symmons valve co. is in Braintree mass we only use this brand at the university I work at the only thing we don't use really are their faucets
