A 30 foot mango tree was cut down to a stump because its roots damaged a sewer pipe below. The tree trimmers completed stump grinding as well. As the workers replaced the damaged section of pipe they saw an old cesspool, no longer used. A small puddle of water from rainfall collected in the cesspool. After digging and cutting through roots, a hole 8’x10’x8’ was the result. Now, it has to be filled.

I need your advice because I’m concerned about the quote given to finish this job. $2k includes filling 3/4 of the hole with gravel, bobcat rental, $600 labor for one day (he might have 2-3 helpers), layer of weed barrier and topped with soil.

This is my first experience with this type of work. My questions are:
Does this sound reasonable?
Gravel costs more than soil. If something goes awry with the pipe again, won’t it be difficult to dig out all that gravel? He explained gravel was needed because of water collecting in the cesspool. But 3/4 full with gravel?
The bobcat. With 2-3 workers, can’t they fill the hole using shovels and wheelbarrows?

Gravel is the correct way. Shovels and wheelbarrows would be much more expensive.
