I was working on my toilet replacing the flap & valve assembly. When replacing the flap assembly, it required for the tank to be removed from the bowl. Then when a placed the tank back to the bowl, I believe that I may have cracked something either the tank or the bowl by over tighting one of the three bolts. When I pour water in the tank water leaks through one of the bolts.

The tank is empty and when looking for a crack I don't see any cracks. I replaced the bolts and the seal, but the water keeps leaking. The tank starts leaking as soon as I pour water into the tank, but NOT by flushing the water. Tightening further the bolt does not help.

1. Are cracks visible?
2. How do I determine where the crack is, if any?
3. Is it time for me to call a plumber to replace the tank?
4. How much of a bill should I expect from a plumber for replacing the tank?

Thanks!

Did you install the bolts correctly.
A 3 hole Kohler Tank requires a special gasket.
Most other tank bolts use a flat neoprene washer. install ONLY the neoprene washer on the bolt before you put it into the tank hole. I've seen guys put a brass washer on 1st then the neoprene washer. The washer seals against the tank and the underside of the bolt. If you cracked it you wil most likely see it if you are looking for one.

If it is an older toilet you may have to replace it as they don't make the larger tanks anymore, they are all 1.6 gal or less now. Don't try to use a new one either as the old toilet traps are designed for more water and you will not get a full flush.

Mr_David, you were right! The problem has been fixed. It was not a cracked tank. Thanks everyone!
