Swivel fitting

Can I use a pvc fitting with a 1in male end to connect to a 1in female
brass swivel fitting with an o-ring or do I need a special male end to ensure
a watertight connection.

That is going to depend on whether the female threads are tapered pipe threads or not. Pipe threads are cut at a bit of an angle, so that the outside diameter of the threads gets larger as the threads travel up the pipe. Conversely, female pipe threads get smaller as they travel into the fitting. Thread sealant applied to the threads is squished in between the two as you tighten the assembly, and the sealant seals the connection.
