For the last week or so, we have noticed that our sump pump runs for about 10 seconds every minute and a half or so. The pump is sealed in the pit due to a radon mitigation system so there is no way I can see what is going on without cutting PVC piping or breaking the seal, which I don't want to do if it can be avoided. We have had rain recently but I fear this is more than just normal operation. I can hear water trickling loudly when the pump is not running and I can hear it gushing when it is running. My guess is that the check valve is malfunctioning, but I don't know how to troubleshoot it. And help would be much appreciated. Thank you.

The install should have either a union or coupling on the discharge and suction lines to allow ready access for inspection/repair-

You can install (either buy or fashion) a plexiglass see through on the cover to be able to visually inspect.

There should also be a coupling (-FERNCO PVC to PVC- rubber hose appearing w clamps) on the radon suction side so as to enable accessing the basin and pump. That can be added. You just remove the valve on the outlet tube to separate that.

The caulk is clear silicone to ensure an air tight assembly to prevent vacuum loss to the radon fan. You carefully cut the caulk with a utility knife to unseal the lid and re-silicone once repairs have been made.

You can also drill an opening in the lid to insert a clear plexiglass window for inspection. I will try to get a picture.

if your pump is jacking off it is most likely the check valve is stuck open

remove the ck valve, clean it, reinstall and see it it stops.

check valve stops the water from coming back into the pit after it has been pumped out.

if it is bad. the pump would pump it out. turn off and it would come right back in, pump would get mad pump it back out
then turn off,, the water would giggle think it was funny and come back, the pump would get mad and pump it back out

replace the ck valve and you stop the constant squabble between the pump and water :D

Thanks all. I am pretty sure it's the check valve because it is acting in the exact fashion that Frodo described. My hope is to be able to correct the issue without cutting the silicone caulking or the radon tube which was hastily installed without a coupling to allow access to the pit.
After removing the check valve assembly to see if there are any visible issues, such as debris, how else do I tell if it is bad?
Also, I am interested in installing a sight glass as well, can these be purchased, or must they be custom made?

Not sure what the line is, but the valve says 1 1/4-1 1/2. Seems to fit on there pretty easily and snug.
That test sounds simple enough.
Thanks again, I do appreciate all the advice.
I'll attempt this in the morning.
