Magnesium anodes are the ones that stink--you want aluminum/zinc or straight aluminun (the former is presferred by many); or a powered active anode ("Google" it). I replaced the OEM magnesium rod in our 3 yr. old A.O. Smith heater with an aluminum rod in early June, the stink went away almost immediately!

Replaced the magnesium anode rod in my AO Smith electric water heater with an all aluminum one last week. Just checked and no smell whatsoever.
