Suddenly our low flush toilet stopped flushing completely. It's one of the super low flush 4 inch American Standard models (4125A) that the flapper only stays up for a second. But now it's not even staying up that long and the toilet isn't flushing completely.

I know how to fix the old 3" flapper models, but I have no idea how to fix this. I don't see any adjustments for getting the flapper to stay up.

Thanks!

You might just have a bad flapper. Look up the model online and get the correct flapper for that toilet.

I should have mentioned that the toilet is only about 18 months old and had worked fine up until now. Twowaxhack I've attached a picture.

I’ve started taking those flushvalves out and throwing them in the garbage.

I replace the entire flushvalve with a 3” flushvalve with a 3” flapper.

Works perfect after that. Those blue seals suck.

I replace it with these. I use everything but the bolts. The heads are too small on the bolts they give you.

I use wolverine brass bolts or I’ve reused the existing if they’re not too old.

You can adjust the flapper to flush the amount of water you want. I usually set it to flush the maximum to help keep older drain piping cleaner.

Don't mean to beat a dead horse, but the seal is fine. I don't understand what changed that the flapper doesn't stay up long enough now. I don't see any adjustment for how to get it to stay open longer.

If you want to beat the dead horse of those flush towers, contact Am Std and ask for remedy they recommend.

You can at least replace the flapper for what little that cost, and how little time that would take, and then get back to us. It's the only variable there.
Or like mentioned above, the entire flush valve could be changed out, one with a flapper that allows for adjusting how much water you can flush with. The Champion flush valve limits your water usage.

Replace the flush valve with what I posted if you want it to work now and in the future.

No need to talk about the why and how’s.

Thanks for the help…….

If you contact Am. Std., ask for the new/improved flush valve assembly.

Better, pay out of pocket for Twowax's absolute best solution.

Again, thanks to all of you for your help. I called American Standard and they diagnosed the problem. Weirdly, they said that the float valve was too high and that there was too much water in the tank. According to Jackie, it has to have just the right mix of air and water. I dropped the water level 1/2 an inch and now it works. Never would have guessed that would be a solution.

I will probably take Twowax's advice and change out the whole assembly, but for now, it's ok.

Again, thank you all.

My issue with them is the flush seal leaks intermittently.

I’ve replaced them and they work fine for a day, week or a month or two and then my customer calls back with the same problem.

That sends me across town for free to replace the seal and it’ll work for a day, week or month.

So I have started to just throw their POS in the garbage and use something more reliable.

I replace about one a week and I haven’t had to go back since I’ve started replacing them.
