Sharing Washing Machine Drain

Just moved into a new house and the water softener is sharing the drain for the washing machine. Not sure how the previous owners hooked up the washing machine, the hose doesn't fit beside or through the hole in the water softener. Plumbing is not my forte and I need a quick fix so I can get the machine up and running.

down and dirty

buy a 1 1/2'' wye and a short piece of pipe

glue 10 or 12'' of pipe to the wye...drop it into the washer drain pipe

stick your wsher hose in the top

and add a few inchs of pipe to the middle of the wye,,,route your other drain to that opening

do not, shove the water softner drain into the stream of the washer
