Sewer drain question

I'm having to replace a sewer line. I'm using 4" pvc to replace the bad section. Dug down and found black pipe. It's thin and a smaller outside diameter than the pvc I am replacing it with. What is this stuff?

It's 3034 sewer pipe.

go to a plumbing supply house to get transition fittings and shielded proflex bands
