Hello,

I am trying to get a permit to install a sewage ejection system in my basement. I am doing it myself and can't understand a few of the question from the plan checker at the city. Please forgive my lack of basic knowledge on some of this.

First Correction

1.) Show fitting connections able to withstand subjected pressure clearly on plan. (PVC with no-hub bands not acceptable)

This is for the section after the pump. I understand that the pump jerks to a start and the fittings can crack and fail. So what does the code allow for pressure fittings? I was showing PVC "pressure fittings" but I guess that isn't flying.


2.) Show location of unions clearly on plan.

So, my beginners assumption was that unions are simply fittings that connect pipes. Obviously I am missing something. Do unions have a special function and need to be located in a certain place?

I think the hub bands they are talking about are rubber connectors with SS hose clamps at each end.

Unions are quick disconnects in the event you have to service or change the pump. They are handy sometimes and sometimes not so handy. They are requiring them, so it doesn't matter.

I would think thin wall PVC would be fine, but most plumbing inspectors require SCH 40. Sump pumps typically can't make over 15 psi. So there is no danger of blowing 160 psi thin wall PVC. 1-1/2" is standard.
 
This is a basic diagram of a sewage ejection system. The union is shown on the diagram. If using pvc, for pressure, solid core is preferred over foam core pvc. Foam core is only rated to 5 psi.
Attached is also what is referred to as no-hub bands. These are typically for cast iron drainage and vent. Also, not for pressure.
