Myshower unit (all one piece) is over 30 years old. It has the 3 handle system; the diverter is from the wall and you pull out knob to convert to shower. They are working but I would like to replace with something modern. Can anyone recommend what type I can replace them with. Also my tub has fine hairline cracks in it. What can I do to fix them and what kind of pain can I use to repaint my unit. Any help appreciated.

There are still a few three handle systems on the market that you could replace yours with, although it means getting into the wall and cutting out the old valve. Similarly, both moen and delta (and I'm sure others) make a plate to cover old three-hole systems in order to convert to a modern single handle unit, but again this means getting in behind the wall and cutting out your old valve.

as for the tub cracks, it depends on the type of tub and how big the cracks are. A steel tub with some spider-webbing in the enamel can be repainted easily. Most home improvement stores will carry a tub refinishing kit which contains a two-part enamel. Fiberglass tubs are a whole other story.

My tub is fiberglass, its a whole unit piece. I have a plumber coming tomorrow as I have a leak at the hot water connection turn off. I have an access panel behind the wall. Thanks for your imput.
