I'm purchasing a pressure reducing valve for my new DIY house. I'm planning to use 1" copper the short distance between the entrance and the water heater (hot) and the manifold (cold). My water company told me that it would be required. My Lowes has 1/2", 3/4" and 1". Any pointers for buying one of these? What should I be looking for? Thanks!

you should be sizeing the system, and using a pipe that will allow for sufficiant flow with all fixtures operating at peak demand.

you will need to know the supply piping size, Pressure and elevation difference from supply to highest fixture served, and Total fixture units.

This is one of the reasons we are plumbers, We do this stuff when required.

:)

I would assume the reason you need a PRV is because the water pressure is to high. If this is the case and it is a single family home 3/4" should be more then large enough.
