A first floor room (was an addition) inside of my home has an old well pit below it, and we recently abandoned the well. The city water was brought in and the city water line connections are running through the old well pit. There was a sump pump removed, so the pit is filling up with groundwater, currently 3 feet high in a 5' high pit.
There's currently an access hatch but I'm looking to put new flooring in the room, so I want to cover the access to the pit with concrete. Some contractors have recommended filling the whole pit up with gravel then putting concrete over the top. However, a couple have said just put a piece of plywood near the top of the pit and concrete over that, leaving the void below. Any suggestions as to which route makes more sense?
