The hose faucet is cracked and we can't turn it. It was 30 years old.

We've inserted 2 pix below.

We ordered what we thought was a replacement, but it wasn't "deep" enough to go all the way in. (pix below).

What do we need to order for a good fit?

Have you tried taking your cracked handle to a local hardware, Home Depot or Lowe's to see if they have a replacement? Also, if there is no name on the faucet body, there may be a foundry mark that would help identify the manufacturer.

That one shows as Out of Stock in HD, but I found this one that looks (to me) to be similar... Does it look okay to you?

That pic says that my Amazon solution would not work because the square shaft is inset pretty far. If I come up with something else, I'll get back to you.

This one from Home Depot appears to be sort of a universal solution that may work:
