I have what is I think is a simple question: Excluding the cost to convert what on average is the savings of gas over oil per year on a percentage basis. I use about 800 gals of oil/yr. at 4.50/gal. A plumber that does conversions told be the savings is about 50%. CAN THAT BE TRUE? I have an efficient oil burner. At 4.50/gal thats $3,600/yr. If gas is truly 50% less then my savings is $1,800/yr. and my payback for conversion is about 4 years. I need help. There is a lot of info. from oil companies telling me it does not make sense to convert but I suspect this info. is somewhat self serving.

A savings of 50% seems to be a little over the top. You may be better off in investing some of the money you will be spending on the conversion on tightening up the house. More insulation may be a good place to start. The insulation company will tell you they can save you 50% also. Gee if you do both it will cost you nothing to heat your home. All kidding aside gas and oil prices go up and down. Each being cheaper then the other at one point or another. A tighter home in my opinion is your best bet.
