Hello friends,

Recently, the faucet in our kitchen sink had a steady drip, so a friend helped me to replace the cartridges in the faucet handles. It appeared to solve the problem.
Not long afterwards, however, when my wife ran the washing machine to do laundry, which is down the hall from our kitchen, she noticed that the kitchen sink faucet began to have a steady drip.
Would any of you be able to offer insight as to why running the washing machine could have set off a leaky kitchen faucet? Do you have any recommendations of how to resolve this problem?
Thank you!

What brand is the faucet, does this only happen when the washer is on????????
Hi Geofd,
We have a Moen faucet. Previously, before we fixed the kitchen faucet handles with new cartridges, we would also get a leak in the kitchen faucet when the shower on the upstairs level ran. I haven't noticed the drip when we run the shower now -- just when we run the washing machine.

Clarification -- this morning, after my shower, I noticed drips in the sink. It now appears that the drips are triggered by both the shower and the washing machine.
Thank you for any thoughts you might have.

What is your static water pressure in your home? Do you have a pressure reducing valve, and if so, how old is it?

Havasu,
Thank you for your question. I will look into getting a gauge to check the pressure. I do have a pressure reducing valve, which should be as old as the house, which is 23 years old.
Is there any test I can run on the valve to know if it needs to be replaced?

A pressure gauge at the spigot beyond your PRV will determine if the PRV is working or not.

I've been at my house 8 years, and I am on PRV # 3.

Havasu,
Thank you for your quick reply.
If I do need a new PRV, which model, materials (brass, copper, etc.) and any other specs would you recommend? How much should I expect to pay?
Thanks again!

If necessary (because you have yet to test it) it is always advisable to purchase the identical unit, because you know it will fit correctly. You have a union so you could replace it yourself with just a few hand tools. By the way, your current PRV is a Watts. A very common and available PRV.

Thank you, Havasu.
I checked the water pressure at the outdoor water hose bib and at my hot water heater. The outdoor reading showed 60 psi while the water heater showed 65 psi.
With the shower water running, I noticed that the kitchen and bathroom faucet continue to leak.
In light of the gauge readings, do you think this is still a water pressure issue or a different issue? Any suggestions?
Thank you!

Seems your PRV is working properly and within normal ranges. Time to move to another reason.

I am out of ideas, but hoping some of our in house experts will chime in with other ideas?

Hi Geofd,
Yes, both the kitchen and bathroom faucets have two handles. I'll try your suggestion and get back soon.
Thank you!

Update:
The leaking faucets in question have been turned off and no other leaks have been identified.
Is there a chance that another part in the faucets, such as the washers, need to be replaced? Could they be the reason why the faucets leak when the washing machine or top-floor shower run?
Thank you!
