No water coming out of hot water side of tub faucet

This is confusing. There is No water coming out of hot water side of tub faucet. The cold works fine. All of the other hot water faucets in the house are working fine. It is a single handle faucet. Do these sometimes get one side of them blocked off,

Yes, either debris in the cartridge or balancing spool, or one of the two needs replacing.

OK, I bought a cartridge and I can't get the old one out. The little plastic thing that comes with the new cartridge is useless. Any ideas on getting the old one out?

PS this one is only 6 years old. Also, I have pulled REAL hard with vice grips attached to the bronze stem.
