My shower is on the first floor, slab construction, and does not have a trap. What can I do to prevent the smell from the cesspool from coming back into the bathroom?

I have heard of some people using a product called a "Grate Seal" with some success but as far as I know it doesn't meet code anywhere in North America. Unfortunately the right move here is the difficult one...chip up the floor and install a proper trap.

I agree with slowdrip the right move here is the difficult one...chip up the floor and install a proper trap. Another product called a "Surf Seal" would also be an option, but as far as I know it doesn't meet code anywhere in North America.
