My current water heater is getting up there in age, starting to see some rust around fittings. I see there are heat pump water heaters at the big box stores and wondered how good they really are. I live in the deserts of Arizona where it's usually hotter than hell. The water here is really hard, so we have a soft water system.

We have solar, a 50 gallon electric heater so energy isn't a concern. My question, is a heat pump water heater efficient enough to warrant the extra cost of the heat pump?

Standard is better IMO. Cheap, easy to work on, easy to get parts.
