My 7 year old, 50 gallon gas water heater after a day, trips the thermal switch if I go past the hot setting. I have replaced the pilot assemble, thermal switch
and cleaned and drained the water heater and the problem still happens. Then I checked the pilot assembly and thermal switch with an ohm meter and everything came up normal.
I hope someone can help me get this problem resolved.

Thank You

Make sure you have good air flow in the area and the vent is proper and clear

Clean the burn chamber out.

thank you for the quick reply
That was my thought that the vent holes were blocked and the chamber was overheating.I tried to clean the chamber the best I could and the burner unit.the heater has been in the same location for 7 years with nothing around it but the furnace.I also put a flame at the top vent and that pulled the flame upward.is there a special tool for cleaning out the chamber any better??

With the furnace and water heater firing together it may be running out of air

Could it be the gas controller?
Not if the heat sensor is tripping snd you can push the reset button on the switch.

It could possibly be the switch even though you’ve replaced it before. Always a chance you got a defective one or the wrong one I suppose.

Well
I have now installed the second thermal switch and set the dial to hot, and a few hours later it tripped.

Make sure you have plenty of combustion air.

Make sure the vent piping is proper and is unobstructed

Check your gas pressure/ observe the burner while firing.

If the above check out good……replace the water heater.

Is this located in the laundry room by chance? If so, likely needs a cleaning of the air intake screens

Today I took apart venting ductwork and ran a brush to the roof and just got some dust. Since I had the venting off, I took out the baffle and cleaned it and shoved the brush down to the chamber. Then used a vacuum and air hose to clean the chamber out. So far so good!!
My fingers are crossed.
Thanks for all the advice
