Have two leak issues I could use advice with. My house was converted to all pvc type plumbing throughout about 25 yrs ago, due to rehabbing. Wife accidentally hit the hot water supply pvc under kitchen sink with sweeper and cracked a T fitting. After replacing the broken T joint, the verticle of the T leads upward about 12inchs to supply line of sink. This is where my problems start. I have one of the small crome 1/4 shuttoff valves screwed on to the last male threaded pvc fitting. Used Teflon tape. This where I need advice, is there different qualities of Teflon, particularly for hot water, how many wraps should I be using and how tight do I run down the chrome shut off without damaging the tape and still end up with a watertight seal. Any advice would be much appreciated.Thank You.

Not a plumbing expert, but do lots of plumbing work on my rentals.

AFAIK, there are only two types of Teflon tape, white is for water and yellow is for gas. When I use either, I typically do 3 revolutions. However, these days I use Rector seal or equivalent pipe dope rather than Teflon tape.

If I understand your question correctly, you are trying to connect the valve to the threaded pvc. If true, tape or dope are fine, but I prefer dope. Tighten it firmly, being sure to hold the pipe with one wrench while turning the valve. Once firmly connected, turn on the water and check for leaks both with the valve and faucet on, and with the faucet off. If there is a leak, tighten a little more. If not, I put a paper towel down on the floor of the sink and check the next day to make sure the paper towel is still dry.
