Jeff Handy
Pro Handyman, NOT A Pro Plumber
I drill holes in bathroom tiles, marble tiles, quartz bath wall panels etc to hang grab bars or shower seats.
I always tell people that something might crack, and I am not liable.
I they don’t agree, I don’t do the job.
I say that I will be extremely careful, will proceed as if it was my own home, but cracks can occur from existing defects in the material.
I have had a few small cracks over two decades of drilling, nothing terrible, small hairline cracks from drilling near an edge after I advised against it.
Super glue or porcelain touch up paint covered it, or just clear silicone with 99 percent of it wiped off after a little bit got absorbed.
Granite and marble often have veins of hairline cracks that can open up with stress.
Manufactured tiles are strong but brittle.
Cracks can occur during the firing process, and not show up until drilling releases stored tension in the material.
