I sprung a leak near water softener. I shut off house water at street. That's the way they do it here. It is a currigan mark 500 water softener. It's not being used anymore since the well was replaced with New Bern city water. Can I cut the leaking pipe or do I have to cut the inlet and outlet to the tank and connect them together?

If the leak is in part of the softener you can switch the bypass valve, most softeners have one on the back, but it maybe already in bypass if your not using it. Otherwise you may have to cut out the leaky section and replace it. I don't know how high your pressure is, but if it's <60 psi you may be able to put a piece of heavy rubber, (like inner tube) over the leak and put a hose clamp around it, I have done it, it works!
