My wife and I just moved into a house that has a hydronic baseboard heating system and I can't seem to eliminate those annoying pinging noises from the expanding fins during heating. It's not really a problem until night as often times the pings are so loud that they wake us up from a sound sleep. I've straightened the individual fins as best I can and none of them are contacting each other, but they do appear to be wider than the baseboard cover (which I can tell has been replaced) can handle as they are mashed up against the covers when the covers are correctly attached. They even leave discolored "burn marks" on the inside of the covers that you can clearly see when they are removed. What can I do to stop or at least dampen these noises so we can stay asleep at night? I was thinking of using an adhesive felt pad on the inside of the covers to perhaps dampen the noise but a contractor friend of mine believes it won't help. Any ideas?

Not much, that's part of hot water heating. Expansion and contraction of the fins. I don't know of a way myself. I would just have a fan on in the room to drone it out myself. Maybe someone else has an idea but I don't think there's much you can do

If the front covers have been replaced and the fins are coming in contact with the cover there isn't much that can be done. You need the front cover that was designed for the baseboard. Almost all baseboard had sliders that went over the elements were they came in contact with the hangers. They do also make expansion joints that can be installed on long runs. But even with them there will be some pinging.
