Hello,

I made a post about a week ago here about a leaky faucet and a slight hissing (almost like the water is on when it’s off) sound coming from the hot shower handle. When I turn the water on a small bit also leaks out of the handle. I’m assuming it’s the stem/cartridge or the rubber o ring seal thing at the end leaking? I’ve continued to use it because it’s a slight leak, but I’d like to get it taken care of soon. I didn’t really want to call a plumber, but I may have to. I thought I’d try here for any advice.

After reading some stuff here, I shut the water off, took the handle off and removed the old stem. I took to one local hardware store and they couldn’t identify it. The drain says “American Standard”, not sure if the stem is also that brand. The number of splines on its broach are 17 (if I counted correctly). I may need to order one on a rare plumbing parts site if it’s older and harder to come by. Or is it possible to replace the rubber ring on it. Again, I wouldn’t know which one to get for it. Also thanks for any help, it’s greatly appreciated.

Before you order anything, measure the stems length.
Do not include the washer screw.

End to the end. Then tell me what it measures

Ok. I have to take it back out lol. I put it back to use the shower still (minor leak). Should have measured it this morning when I had it out.

Thank you so much for replying. I wasn’t sure if it would be easy to identify.
It’s an older house (probably 70s).

Sorry buddy, I just don’t want to give you bad info without doing my due diligence.

Totally understandable. I have to get the water shut off valve for the front yard from my friend I used it from today. I’m going to have to just buy one. So I’m going to try to get a measurement as soon as I can.

Not sure if any of this would help but I measured it while it’s screwed in place for now, also a picture of the old handle.

I understand. I know the above measurements aren’t exact, but until I shut the water off again those are what I just measured.

I had no idea there were so many different kinds of these things lol.

Pull the stem and measure it’s length and then get an accurate spline count.
I looked behind the ac unit there’s like a small crawl space type spot lol. Anyway, I took my camera in there and was able to spot this on the valve that looks like it reads 2583291 ??

So I googled that number and found a patent that said “Indiana brass” in it. So went to the component site and found an American brass stem and compared it. Thoughts? I have a plumber coming anyway this week upcoming but I was so curious to find out what this thing is. EE6C43A0-4446-4280-937B-25CABD67EDE9.jpeg

I’ve been obsessed with finding this thing. After a hard comparison from another site, it has to be this one right?
