Hi, I have freezeless hydrant that has never given me problems up until a few nights ago. It got real cold around 10 below. The hydrant is in an unheated barn, out of the wind. When I went to use it in the morning the handle raised easily, but no water came out. After setting a propane heater by it for about 10-15 minutes it started working. Did it freeze down below? I would think if it froze I wouldn't even be able to lift the handle. Also, when it did start to "thaw" for lack of a better word at this point, when I lifted the handle I felt pressure behind it like it was being pushed by the water. Nothing still came out after fully open, but then after a few minutes the water started flowing again.

Thanks for any input. Any way to prevent this in the future. Wrap it with heat tape possibly??

A thick layer of straw on the surrounding ground could also keep it warmer on below zero nights.
