My electric water heater started to make a louder hissing noise. It used to be a low level hissing noise. I am assuming this is when it is turning on to heat the water. About 6 months ago I removed it and reinstalled it in the same spot when I was renovating the area for a laundry room. I mistakenly turned on the heater before it was filed with water and the upper heating element burnt. I replaced it and everything was seemingly ok till now. It is a GE and has a manufacture date of 2/2006. Is there a problem?

They can make a slight hissing sound it"s nothing to be concerned about. In fact when we do replacements we listen for that sound after completing the install to tell us all is well.

johnjh2o, as I stated though, it went from a slight hissing sound to a much louder hissing sound and I mean very noticeably louder- otherwise I would not be having concerns. This surely cannot be normal. In your experience what does this mean?

I hear them hissing and popping and banging all the time...it doesn't seem to affect performance at all.
