Hi guys , does anyone know what kind of fittings/ connections these are and how they work ? Thank you in advance . These were found on top of a 80 gallon water heater

viega ProPress fittings, they take a special tool to install.

Yeah, stuffs not cheap....luckily the government buys it for us lol ;-)

Recently we had a 1/2" pro press fitting acting as a cap pop off when the line froze at the fitting. It must have "un-crimped" itself from the ice. Never thought that would happen.

that dielectric union appears to be leaking

No leaks were present . The initial call was for a loud sound coming from the water heater . I tested by opening and shutting faucets but didn't hear anything ,

I hate them calls. people do not understand a water heater makes noise. they grumble, burp,bubble,
and snort. long as it aint whistle'n and breath'n your ok
