ok here goes. First off, I am replacing a 30 gallon Natural gas water heater with a 40 gallon gas unit. I have a OLD house and the opening is barely wide enough to get the tank through. This is an original installation..not the tank but where and how it is plumbed. I like to do things correct. I could just throw another one in but I would like to do it per code. Currently there are no combustion vents to the closet, nor have there ever been. It has solid door and the single 3" b vent going through the roof. My thoughts were it needed combustion vents, even though it never has before. My original plan was to install grills in the door but it seems this is a no no. The heater is in a closet hallway. I can either run combustion vent pipes through to the attic, or to the crawlspace if that is an option. The attic has a ridgevent. My only concern was the heat from the attic. Im assuming the closet should be sealed good enough that it shouldnt suck air. I would think getting it from the crawlspace would be the way to go but Im not sure. The crawlspace is also vented. Thanks for any help.
