How soon after pouring lead on a hub and spigot joint do plumbers begin caulking the joint?

In the length of time it takes to return the ladle back to the lead pot. It cools very fast, in fact when pouring horizontal joints if the lead isn't hot enough it will cool before it gets to the bottom of the joint.
