We live in the country. Our water tests safe to drink. Although it is not extra hard we have a water softener. No problems with laundry, dishwasher or showers. We have a waterline that is unsoftened for the fridge and one kitchen cold faucet. However the calcium has ruined an expensive kettle and the ice is amost white. The softened water is not salty but it has a flat taste. Is there any way to remove the calcium for drinking only?

Why would you use unsoftened water for your fridge and kitchen? Seems to me that’s a place you’d want de-calcified water.

Consider an under-sink RO system, feed it soft water. Split off a line (“tee”) for the fridge and icemaker. Use the separate faucet (or fridge water) for drinking.

In the photo see the under sink RO with the blue tank on the left (you can’t see the connection to the fridge) and the drinking water faucet to the right of the main faucet.
