Got a water heater today and didn't notice until I got it home and opened the box that it had a sizeable dent. The store won't take it back because they think I did it. What do you think the chances are that it will work if I hook it up?

It’ll work but if I didn’t do it then they would be taking it back.

I’d take pics, wheel it into their store and take more pics.
Then leave it and contact my credit card company to file a dispute.

I’ve taken many of them back. So many that I started opening them in the store or at supply house.

I'd take it back. You don't want that sitting in your basement looking like that. That box had to be mashed to look like
that I would think but sometimes not. It will probably work ok but that stinks if the store won't take it back. Did you talk
to the manager?

If you paid with credit card tell the store you are disputing the credit card and force them to take it back.

Them refusing to take it back may work for a few folks, but as said above, take it back and DEMAND a new water heater. It will be sent back to the factory, so there is no loss (other than handling) by the store. If they play hardball, you play hardball and dispute the charge with the credit card company.
