Best way to marry 3 inch ABS to the corner piece.

I already replaced some if this 3 inch copper pipe using a ZIP connector. I found after cutting that the 3 inch copper is very thin on bottom as it is likely from 1967 (original), so I want to replace the entire length with ABS. What is best or proper way to terminate the ABS to that corner piece (Elbow) in the photo before it leaves the house to my septic tank? It looks to be soldered in place. I suppose I could use the same ZIP collar but I am worried about the remaining piece being thin and leaking later and also if it is a bad idea clamping that close to what looks to be a very old solder joint.

Yes 3 inch Copper pipe.. Not sure about the elbow.

Sorry would that fernco marry the corner piece and the ABS or the last bit of 3 inch copper and the abs? I would rather remove all the 3 inch copper and just have the ABS and the corner piece. Eliminating the thin 3 inch pipe. I added some more detailed explanation to the original post. Have you got a photo of the fernco piece?

It’ll stretch over the brass fitting. Warm it up before you use it. Tighten the bands equally alternating between the two. I like to put a little silicone grease on those stainless gear clamps sometimes.

OK to confirm,,, one side of Fernco clamp to 3" ABS and the other side stretch over brass fitting and clamp evenly? (first cut 3 inch copper off flush at first solder joint). Wonder if toilet paper etc will get stuck at the old junction inside the fitting, I guess just file inside before clamping?

I’d recommend just using 3” cu x 3” plastic shielded adapter and cut the copper pipe as to leave 1.5” stub to attach to. Be sure to properly support the ABS with rigid hangers every 4’

my only problem is the 3 inch is really thin on bottom all way down pipe and worried if I do that it will wear out right before elbow. Can I not tie to elbow sleeve like above suggested?

Just try the band I suggested. It typically works fine. Brass fittings are not much bigger than the pipe.

Tighten the bands evenly and apply a little silicone grease to the worm drive clamps where it tightens.

If it doesn’t work out the way you want, what are you out ? $20 ?

true but once I cut that 3 inch copper flush with the fitting I am kind of comitted it has to work at that point otherwise what is plan B? Get a plumber out to solder into it or swap out the elbow. lol.

No…..just install a different Fernco until you can go to plan B.

Grab a 3” pvc x 3” pvc cheap Fernco to have just incase.


Again, this isn’t life or death. The original fernco I suggested will most likely fit very good. If it doesn’t, so what, use the cheap fernco here I’m about to link and support the pipe on both sides very well.

I used these for years and still will use them on occasion. It just requires the pipe be very well supported or you can get deflection and it can cause clogs. They’re illegal because of this……but they still work if you know WTF you’re doing.

Just to be clear cause I am dumb. I am cutting on the blue line flush. Then stretching right side of seal over ring piece with red line on it and butting New long ABS piece up against blue cut using left side of seal over it.

However I spoke to septic guy and I think we are going to change elbow and all out to ABS as when he did my septic he apparently missed replacing pipe between septic and house as it is Teracotta still. So it
makes sense to replace all right to tank.
