Two years ago I replaced my water heater with a 40-gallon AO Smith (gas-powered). For the last few weeks I notice a sulfur-like stink coming out of the spout when I turn the hot water tap on in the upstairs faucet first thing in the morning. The stink goes away after about 10 seconds and is gone by the time hot water comes out. I don't smell it at any other time, just in the morning.

Ideas?

I don't think I can unscrew the anode that's in there without twisting the entire heater around on its pedestal.

Impact wrenches work wonders. There should really be a pan under that, and the pop off could easily be routed to the utility tub.

It's a new heater and I don't think that a pan with a 2-inch lip around it will do much. After the photo was taken I routed a hose from the T&P valve to the sink. And replaced the drain valve with a full-flow ball valve.

If someone standing at the sink and the relief valve operstes due to excessive temp and pressure they will be burned.

Not likely but possible. It wouldn’t pass code here.
