I'd like to use the dishwasher's 'delay' feature, but how can I get the hot water up to the sink at 2:00 AM automatically? I've been pondering some jury-rig solution of a solenoid valve on a timer that runs the water directly into the drain, and but it would have to run for just a minute or two and then shut off. But it needs to run prior to the dishwasher going on, which is not every day, and not at any set time, just 4 hrs after I decide to run it.

The more I think about it the more I wonder if the dishwasher's delay feature is much of a feature at all.

How hard or expensive is it to have hot water up at the dishwasher/sink all the time? Can it be done without running a return line to the water heater?

Most newer dishwashers runs through serval prewash cycles before the main wash cycle, the water should be hot by the time of main wash cycle and the dishwasher itself should heat the water up more. You can also check out a Grundfos comfort system or another system like it.

Most newer dishwashers have a heating element, which is similar to a electric hot water heater. I can assure you that the water will be good and hot while it is washing your dishes, whether it is 2 AM or 2 PM. I'd recommending that you use the delay feature, since it also conserves electricity if the appliance is set to wash during the non-peak times.
