I installed a new sink and the plumber did a totally new connections between the sink, dishwasher. Air gap, etc. (No Garbage disposal has been installed). Two weeks after the installation I am getting water coming from the air gap when I run the dishwasher. (I rinse everything before i put it in the dishwasher to remove any food particles).
When I called the installer I have been told that: "This is common with sinks that do not have a garbage disposal, as food can get stuck in the p-trap".
1. Is this a true statement, or just an excuse on their part ?
2. Can this (block of the air gap) happen in 2 weeks time frame?

Thank you,
Rami

New dishwasher, or just a new sink?

If they replaced all the dishwasher hose (black hose to and from the air gap), it really should be fine. Plenty of dishwashers don't drain into a disposal.

Only reason water comes up the air gap is a clog somewhere, though. If they reused hose, maybe it's there. Maybe it's the sink drain somewhere. Installing new things on old plumbing systems can reveal unexpected problems a lot of times.

You can poke around with checking out the hoses, or get a plumber to check it out, and snake the drain.

Cheap air gaps that mount on the counter tops or sinks for dishwashers should be BANNED.

My history: About six years go, I renovated my kitchen. Reinstalling a disposer was problematic due to placement of drain pipe. Cabinetmaker advised most people in area were not installing disposers and no problems were known. Since with disposers I was having plumbers unclog stoppages every four years, it was well worth the risk of having no disposer ... just use a fine mesh strainer in the sink No problems to-date!
FYI, I believe it is relative to all major dishwasher mfrs, they recommend to not rinse dishes prior to placing them in the washer, as they design their washers to use the orts to assist the cleaning action.

I installed a new sink (replacing my double bowl sink by single bowl 30" sink). The dishwasher was there already (for 4-5 years now. Being used once a week or two, removing all food from plates prior to putting them in the dishwasher). Also: I am using fine mesh strainer in the sink.
All the hoses/pipes are brand new (picture attached) it leaked the first time I used it after the installation.

I got a new dishwasher & air gap years ago, and water immediately spewed out of the air gap. So handyman changed out the drain hose back to the original one, and it was okay. I guess the new hose was limiting in some way, no idea. But, starting from that point on, the air gap would spew every year. The cause is crud build-up in the drain hose (I never pour stuff down the drain but I guess it still accumulates). Clean out the drain hose, and it would be okay for another year... Finally, I got new countertops a couple yrs ago, got rid of the disgusting garbage disposal since I never used it. All new plumbing hookup underneath with what he says is a more direct connection, and knock on wood, no spewing out the air gap so far...

Looks like an undersized branch on the tailpiece
