Water Softener selection help

I'm having scale problem that has become bad lately.
Looking at a whole home softening system. I've don't a little reading and the Fleck 5600SXT 48,000 Grain Water Softener looks like a good fit. Just need some advice to see if I'm on the right track.

I have a family of five, 3 bathrooms and will be installing myself.

Also, do I need to put a filter in-line on the house side of the softener to catch any grains or pellets?

Did you ever end up buying a water softener? I just ordered a Fleck 5600SXT from what I read it's a great softener and you can't beat the price.
