I have a ten year-old hot water heater located in my attic directly over the den. It was installed with a galv. pan with a 3" high sides and a 1" pvc drain to outside grade. I have tested it and it works.
Would it be worth my while to replace the sacaficial rod - I tentatively tried once, but it obviously needed to be soaked in penetration fluid and I needed someone to hold onto the tank.
I would also like to add an auto shutoff / detection kit. The only one I can find costs $550 and that's a little much at the moment, are there any other brands at around a $100 - $150 that are reliable?

A ten year old hot water heater is at the end of its life. I wouldn't waste any money rebuilding it and would choose to replace it completely.
