I am having problems with water hammer. I have exceptionally high water pressure in my area. I first noticed this when I bought the house 2 yrs ago. There was a bucket under the P.R.V for the H.W.T. It was always filling up. I thought it was the valve itself, so i replaced it. Kept leaking. So I bought a water gauge and installed it to see how much pressure there was. It was 75 psi +/- a few. So I bought a Red Lion RL-4 expansion tank. The h.w.t stopped leaking and I noticed my pressure dropped to a steady 64 psi. I cannot get it any lower! Do I need it lower!? Ive installed water arrestors on the lines to my washer and it still knocks the pipes when filling. (washer is a high efficiency one, it is located approx 15 feet away from main line). I believe my system is a closed one as well because there are one way check valves on main incoming line and line feeding lawn spinklers. I also have an lawn irrigation system. It rattles the pipes too when charging sprinkler heads. Any help would be much appreciated.

Are you confusing the "prv for the hot water tank" with the relief valve? They are two totally different things and a pressure reducing valve does not come stock on hot water tanks. If you have 75psi coming in, you want a pressure reducing valve after your water meter.

My fault, I didnt realize prv meant pressure reducing valve. I was using "prv" to describe the relief valve from the h.w.t. I do not have a pressure reducing valve in my system, would that lower the pressure in my system? How much pressure should be in a normal system, Ive checked and have found anywhere between 45-55 psi??
