I just had a water softener and sulfur blocker installed outside my home. The installer has the drains for both units just running out on to the grass. Is that the proper way to get rid of the waste water?

Post your zip code.
Or anonymously consult with your city about the code for that.

It will kill the grass, it's salty and will have some calcium in it, and who knows what else. It should of gone into the sewer, I know some don't think so, but we always have and never had a problem.

Thanks for your reply. How much water involved in a recharge? Could I just make a small dry well?

A decent size dry well sounds good.
Call the manufacturer to learn about volume of discharge.

Post your zip code.

Is freezing a concern?

I've had water softeners for almost 50 years, and my parents before that, and I have no idea how much water they pass in a regeneration! I agree with Jeff, call the manufacturer, and/or put a tub out there to catch the waste water when it regenerates. And I think a drywell would work fine, as long as it's dry and big enough. If they put the softener outside you aren't in Texas are you? They had a lot of plumbing outside and it didn't turn out well for them! Prepare for the worse, the 10 year freezes are going to happen every 3 years in the future!
