I have a home in a cold climate that is plumbed with pex. My kitchen is quite a distance from the hot water heater.

To complicate this question a bit more, this is my 2nd home. I am not here that much. When I leave, I turn off the water and turn off the tank type water heater.

I have seen several ways to recirculate the hot water under a distant sink to prevent waiting such a long time for hot water. Some use a pump under the sink and some add a pump to the hot water side of the water heater.

I don't like the idea of all the hot water in the house having to run through the pump, I already have a flow problem in this house. Some day I will need to address the low pressure/flow in my shower.

So my question here is about picking one of the various under sink recirculating systems. My preference would be to run a return line to the heater, but in this home, that would be way to much work.

I would love suggestions from the experts here, for which system to explore. I have power under the sink where my dishwasher plugs in. I also don't have much of a problem with the other sinks in the house. They are all located less than 15 feet from the heater. Its just my kitchen sink that take forever and wastes loads of water.

Thanks in advance...

Greg

I’d install the circulator with bypass valve under the kitchen sink.

A pump can also be installed under the sink, not just at the water heater.

I just installed one in this situation except this customers issue was a lavatory in a half bath 100’ from the closest hot water source.
