Types of rigid pipe (water) that can be used undeground in dirt?

I know copper can't be used underground and I'm trying to avoid using galvanized steel, what are my rigid water pipe options to use underground?

There are many types of line that can be used underground. But that is determined buy the water company that is supplying your water. Give them a call they will be more then happy to give you a list of what is approved in your area.

Here in Southern CA we are allowed to use these types. But like john said the district or city/county may have a standard for what type they want.

Copper, Type L or better (We use type K) Also must use silver solder.
SCH 40 PVC Pipe
SCH 80 PVC Pipe
CLass 150 DR 18 pipe
CLass 200 DR 14 Pipe
200 PSI bell spigot pipe

I can't find the information I'm looking for. As to what pipe is allowed underground for residential use. If copper type L is allowed, that is easy to get at home depot. But copper type K will be a challenge to get in small quantities.

Page # 25 shows type L or type K is allowed, provided it is buried 18" deep.

Thanks. Is it okay to run it bare or does it need some kind of insulation?

Usually bare is fine, in only one district have I had to wrap it.

I didn't wrap mine but I did make sure the pipe was embedded in a nice soft sand, rather than worrying about sharp rocks puncturing the softer copper.

You can avoid the silver solder if you use corporation couplings.
